Background of the Study
Mobile push notifications are increasingly utilized by academic institutions to improve communication and enhance the overall user experience (UX) in library environments. At Borno State University, these notifications serve as a dynamic tool to alert users about new acquisitions, due date reminders, and upcoming library events (Abdullahi, 2023). The integration of push notifications into the library’s digital services is designed to foster timely engagement, encourage resource utilization, and enhance user satisfaction. Such systems contribute to a proactive communication strategy, ensuring that students and faculty are consistently updated on important library information (Musa, 2024). Nevertheless, the effectiveness of push notifications largely depends on their relevance, timing, and the digital literacy of the user base. Challenges include the risk of information overload, privacy concerns, and the potential for message fatigue. This study investigates how mobile push notifications influence user engagement and satisfaction by assessing the contextual relevance of messages, user response patterns, and overall impact on digital library usage. The research further explores strategies to optimize the balance between informative alerts and user convenience, aiming to enhance the overall UX (Goni, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Even though mobile push notifications at Borno State University are intended to improve library communications, several issues have emerged. Users have reported receiving irrelevant or excessive notifications, which may contribute to information fatigue and reduced effectiveness of the communication system (Abdullahi, 2023). Additionally, concerns about privacy and the frequency of alerts have resulted in mixed reactions among the student population. These challenges have undermined the system’s ability to enhance the overall user experience, as the potential benefits of timely information delivery are offset by irritation and disengagement. This study aims to identify the specific drawbacks associated with current push notification practices and seeks to provide recommendations to optimize their impact on user engagement (Goni, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze the effectiveness of mobile push notifications in library communications.
To assess user satisfaction and the impact on engagement.
To recommend strategies for optimizing push notification practices.
Research Questions:
How effective are mobile push notifications in enhancing library UX?
What are the primary concerns of users regarding these notifications?
How can the frequency and relevance of notifications be improved?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of how mobile push notifications can enhance library user experience. The insights gained will inform strategies to improve communication practices within the library and foster greater engagement among users. The findings will guide digital communication improvements that promote timely and relevant information delivery, ultimately contributing to a more efficient library service (Musa, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses solely on mobile push notifications in the library context at Borno State University and does not consider other digital communication channels or external influences.
